The New England Patriots’ 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks delved deeper than the numbers in the final score.

It delved into Super Bowl history, franchise history and career history. And as a result, it’s time to delve into them.

The New England Patriots ran past the Indianapolis Colts on the way to clinching a Super Bowl XLIX berth Sunday night in Foxborough, 45-7.

But more numbers resonated than the ones in the AFC Championship Game’s final score.

The New England Patriots’ comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens was not about one play. And that was realized in the 35-31 outcome.

But before the Patriots turn to page to hosting the AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium, here is a closer look at what went into the divisional round there.

Week 17 in Numbers: Patriots vs. Bills

Numbers often tell the story. This time, it’s hard to say what they told.

The New England Patriots headed into Sunday’s matchup with the Buffalo Bills with little to gain in the standings. The first-round bye had already been clinched, and so had the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs for the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

But Buffalo had something to play for.

The product on the field, in many ways, was a byproduct of that, as the 8-7 Bills outlasted the 12-3 Patriots by a score of 17-9 in Week 17. And as the Bills turned to 9-7 and the Patriots turned to 12-4, it all began to add up.

A 10-7 halftime score would not decide Sunday’s game MetLife Stadium, as the New England Patriots did enough in the second half to defeat the New York Jets by a score of 17-16 in Week 16.

The final meeting of the year between the Patriots and Jets was not unlike the last one. It was close. And it was ugly. But it was enough to send New England to 12-3 and New York to 3-12 heading into the final week of the 2014 regular season.

It was a numbers game.

The New England Patriots secured an 11-3 record and a 41-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, settling the score from what was a 33-20 loss at Sun Life Stadium in the season opener.

But more was secured and settled in the process of Week 15.

A 23-14 win over the San Diego Chargers thrust the New England Patriots back atop the AFC on Sunday night.

But while the Patriots moved to 10-3 and the Chargers fell to 8-5, the numbers that stood behind the game said as much as the outcome of it.

A 26-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers was the end result of Week 13 for the New England Patriots, as both sides landed at 9-3 on the season.

But beyond the final score and the win-loss records reside the numbers that factored into it.

On the same day 14 years ago, Tom Brady entered in relief of quarterback Drew Bledsoe to finish off the fourth quarter of a 34-9 loss. But this time around, Brady and the New England Patriots were the ones on the winning end against the Detroit Lions.

The numbers told the story of what took place in Foxborough on Sunday afternoon.

The New England Patriots’ ascension to 8-2 came at the expense of the 6-4 Indianapolis Colts.

Yet within Sunday’s 42-30 Patriots victory at Lucas Oil Stadium, there were more numbers in the fold than the team’s records and the final score.
