There may no longer be one dominant pipeline for Bill Belichick. But there are still several college streams running down into the Foxborough ravine.

The New England Patriots have collected players from an assortment of schools over the years, whether it be first-year pros or 10-year veterans, whether it be via free agency, trade, or the draft. And admittedly, the strength of some connections in the collection aren’t as strong as they once were.

Some of Belichick’s ties have dispersed in different directions, with the likes of Greg Schiano, Urban Meyer and Randy Edsall no longer at the forefront of the programs the Patriots head coach once picked from. Yet other waters have appeared over the years.

And with the Patriots’ pool currently standing 75 deep, here is a look through the most prominent products featured in its depths.

Rutgers

  • The Tally: 5
  • The Former Patriots Draft Picks: 3
  • The Names: Tim Wright, Jonathan Freeny, Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, Devin McCourty

Though Schiano is no longer head coach of the Scarlet Knights, six of his former Rutgers players remain together in New England. Belichick’s son, Stephen – now on the Patriots’ staff – once walked onto the Rutgers football team as a fifth-year senior long snapper. And college defensive end Jonathan Freeny – signed by the Patriots two weeks ago – once spent three seasons as a teammate of converted cornerback Devin McCourty, and two as a teammate of former wideout Tim Wright, corner Logan Ryan and safety Duron Harmon. But there is another tie still in the fold, with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ younger brother, Ben, now coaching the Scarlet Knights’ offense.

  • The Former Patriots Draft Picks: 0

A handful of years before Kirk Ferentz became head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes in 1999, he was offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns under Belichick. Since then, an assortment of players – including Markus Zusevics, Jeff Tarpinian and A.J. Edds – have spent time with the Patriots. And now, with linebacker James Morris, cornerback Bradley Fletcher and tight end Scott Chandler, the list of Ferentz players stands at three. “I know he and Coach Belichick have a lot in common in the way they approach coaching,” Chandler said in a conference call with the media last Friday.
