Chandler Jones will not make his return tonight against the San Diego Chargers.
Though a limited participant in the last two weeks of practice, the New England Patriots defensive end will be sidelined once again with the hip injury that has hampered him since it transpired against New York Jets in Week 7.
But once the 8:30 p.m. kickoff gets underway Sunday night at Qualcomm Stadium, Jones will not be the only defensive starter held out.
Linebacker Dont’a Hightower is also among the Patriots’ seven inactives, as a shoulder injury suffered against the Green Bay Packers left him questionable heading into Week 14. His absence will call upon a new helmet for sideline communication between plays.
Also inactive for New England is fourth-round rookie halfback James White, fourth-round offensive tackle Cameron Fleming, guard Jordan Devey, special-teamer and linebacker Chris White, as well as cornerback Alfonzo Dennard.
For James White, it is the 11th time this season that the Wisconsin product has been scratched from the 46-man gameday roster. For Fleming, it is the third game in a row the Stanford Cardinal has missed due to an ankle injury. And as for Devey, it is the sixth consecutive game the former Memphis Tiger has been inactive.
Dennard, on the other end, was active last week against the Packers. But the Patriots will opt for undrafted rookie corner Malcolm Butler this week instead, making No. 37 a scratch for the seventh time this campaign.
Chris White was listed as doubtful after missing New England’s last contest with an ankle injury. His absence will call upon fellow linebacker Darius Fleming – a recent promotion from the practice squad – to help in the kicking game.
New England will have defensive tackle Sealver Siliga active after the three-year pro found himself on the transaction wire Saturday. Siliga was placed on short-term injured reserve with a foot injury following Week 3 versus the Oakland Raiders, yet the interior lineman will be in uniform for the first time since then.
With regards to the Chargers, running back Ronnie Brown, wide receiver Dontrelle Inman, tight end David Johnson, guard Jeff Baca, nose tackles Ryan Carrethers and Damion Square, and linebacker Cordarro Law will be inactive Sunday night.
